PSG star Kylian Mbappé wants to realise his dream of competing at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris
Kylian Mbappé says he hopes to realise his dream of playing for the French national team at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Mbappé, who was born and raised in the French capital, captain of Paris Saint-Germain and the national team, said he wants to play in the tournament next summer, although he is not sure if he will take part.
“I don’t know if I will be there. But I hope to be there anyway,” he said. Mbappé told French TV Sport. “Everybody knows that I have always dreamed of playing in the Olympic Games.” The Games will run from 26 July to 11 August, starting just 12 days after the Euro 2024 finals and ending just days before the start of the 2024-25 Ligue 1 season, which will be postponed because of the Olympics.
“It is not up to me. There are many factors to take into account and we have to look at them all,” Mbappé added. “I didn’t force them [the Games] either. They are not on the FIFA calendar. If people don’t want me to play them, that means I can’t play them.” According to the rules of the Olympic Games, only three players over the age of 23 can play in the tournament. Mbappé is 24 years old.
Mbappé has already helped France win the 2018 World Cup title and came close to defending the crown in Qatar, where he scored a hat-trick and set up a dramatic twist in the final against Argentina, but his team only lost after a penalty shoot-out.
Last week he criticised PSG on social media for using his image in a video to boost season ticket sales for next season. However, the French striker spoke to head coach Christophe Gauthier and announced on Wednesday that he has no plans to leave the club.
“The next step? Win the Champions League,” “I’ve already reached the final, the semi-finals, the quarter-finals, the last 16… I’ve done everything, but I haven’t won yet. That’s all I need. Where [do I want to do it]? Paris. I’m Parisian and I have a contract. So it’s PSG.”
